PSN Game of the Week: Lake Travis On To Quarter Finals, Rolls Past Los Fresnos 54-7 Behind QB's

Lake Travis' #16 Charlie Brewer connects with brother #10 Cade Brewer

Prep Sports Nation was in Austin, Texas for a playoff edition of "Friday Night Lights" as the Lake Travis Cavaliers hosted the Los Fresnos Falcons, who made the drive up from south Texas. The Cavaliers, who lost in the 6A D1 State Championship last year to Katy, received the ball first and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard scoring 1:36 into the game when Sr. quarterback #16 Charlie Brewer connected with Sr. wide receiver/running back #15 Maleek Barkley for a 39-yd touchdown pass and after the Cavaliers were successful on the 2-pt conversion, Lake Travis was up 8-0. On the ensuing position, Los Fresnos' offense was unable to get anything going and was forced to punt the ball but the Lake Travis defense blocked the punt attempt and returned the ball for the score and once again converting the 2-pt conversion as the Cavaliers took a 16-0 lead with 8:27 left in the opening quarter. On their second possession, the Falcons' offense appeared to have settled down and was able to move the ball some but eventually stumbled and was once again forced to punt the ball to the Cavaliers. With the ball in their offense's hands for the second time in the game, Lake Travis took to the air again for a 64-yd touchdown pass from Brewer to Sr. wide receiver #2 Cade Green and the Cavaliers were now up 23-0 with with under three minutes to play in the first quarter.

Lake Travis #15 Maleek Barkley finds end zone untouched

Los Fresnos took over after the Lake Travis score and appeared to being making some progress against the Cavaliers' defense before Falcons Sr. running back #28 John Salazar fumbled the ball and Lake Travis recovered on the Los Fresnos 41-yd line. Brewer once again lead the Cavaliers' offense back on the field and scored on the first play of the drive which was a 41-yd flee flicker from Brewer to Jr. wide receiver #9 Alec Fuentes giving the Cavaliers a 30-0 after the extra point was made. On their next possession, Lake Travis would go up 37-0 after Brewer rushed for a 27-yd touchdown. Brewer would throw for one more touchdown before the half ended when he connected with his brother Sr. wide receiver/tight end #10 Cade Brewer for a 10-yd touchdown pass as the Cavaliers took a 44-0 lead into the half. Brewer finished the first half completing 12 for 12 passing, throwing for 240 yards and 4 touchdowns, with 1 rushing touchdown. That would be all for Brewer's stat line as the Cavaliers' starters would not see the field in the second half. With their second string in the game, the Cavaliers would score on 12-yd pass from Jr. quarterback #12 Matthew Baldwin to #9 Fuentes as Lake Travis was up 51-0.

The Cavaliers would then add a 3-pt field goal to go up 54-0. The Los Fresnos' offense was able to move the ball a little bit more in the second half but not enough to find the end zone until the 1:06 mark of the fourth quarter when Sr. quarterback #2 Mark Mata rushed for a 22-yd score however it came too little too late as Lake Travis would win by a final score of 54-7. After the game Lake Travis Head Coach Hank Carter said of his players, "the kids played hard. The decision for them to play hard was made for them a long time ago. We hold pretty high standards here and we're always going to play hard and hopefully we play well and today it looks like we did." When asked about the play of quarterback Brewer, Carter replied, "I can't say enough about Charlie and the way he's led our football team. Expectations around here are pretty high for a quarterback but I tell you what, I don't know of any of them that have played better than what he's doing right now. Very proud of him!" Lake Travis will face rival Westlake, who won their third round match-up against United 55-15, next week in the quarter finals. Lake Travis won the regular season match-up against Westlake 49-7 back in October.
