Lovejoy Wildcats Claw Past Jonesboro Cardinals, 38-33 In Close Region Semifinal
Friday night the Lovejoy Lady Wildcats faced the Jonesboro Lady Cardinals in the Georgia High School Association Class 6A Region 4 semifinals. The Cardinals and Wildcats relatively close game majority of the night, while onesboro would lead the final few minutes of the third quarter and would end the quarter with a 25-24 lead. As the fourth quarter began, Lovejoy would regain the lead to go up 26-25 with 6:27 remaining in regulation as Jonesboro would use a timeout. Out of the timeout, LoveJoy's #22 Sr. Brittany Smith would lift the Wildcats to a 28-25 lead with 5:00 to go.
Jonesboro would regain the lead with 3:30 to go when #23 Fr. Jaida Cornelius knocks down a 3-point basket giving the Cardinals a 30-29 lead. After a pair of fouls by the Wildcats, Jonesboro would go up 32-30 with 2:30 to go but a Cardinals foul on Lovejoy’s Smith would help the Wildcats tie the game at 32 with 2:20 to go in the fourth quarter. On the ensuing Cardinals possession, #10 Sr. Saadia Munford would draw the foul and connect on the front end of a one and one to lift the Jonesboro 33-32 but Lovejoy would answer back to take the lead again forcing Jonesboro to use another timeout with 1:26 remaining.
Lovejoy would add to their lead after #10 Sr. Symone Williams drew a foul and hit both ends of the one and one to give the Wildcats a 36-33 lead with :41 remaining in the fourth quarter. On their next possession, Jonesboro would have a chance to tie the game but came up short when Munford missed on a jump shot as Lovejoy came up with the rebound and #12 J'Auana Robinson would ice the game for the Wildcats with a layup as Lovejoy knocked off the Lady Cardinals 38-33 to advance to the finals against Tucker.
