Rebels Sweep Tigers As Effingham County Takes Opening Round GHSA 6A State


On Thursday, the Georgia High School Association Class 1A though 7A Baseball State Playoffs got underway. In 6A action, the Mundy’s Mill Tigers faced the Effingham County Rebels in a best of three opening round series, with the Rebels taking Game 1 by a final score of 2-1. In Game 2, the Tigers take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when #7 Lavar Martin would step to the plate and with one out and a runner at third and come up with the sacrifice fly to center field, scoring the runner at third.

In the bottom of the first, Effingham County would muster up a run of their own with two outs and a runner at third, when #22 Ryan Pye would drill one just past the second baseman into right-center field scoring the runner from third base and the Rebels tying the game at 1-1. The Tigers however would regain the lead in the top of the third inning with two out and a runner at second.

That is when #14 Melvin Crawford would come up with another RBI single for Mundy’s Mill and the Tigers taking a 2-1 lead. As play continued into the bottom of the third inning, the Rebel’s bats would come up with two big hits including #5 Zach Wilson’s two run single to make it a 3-2 game and #7 Perry Fulcher’s two run single to make it a 5-2 game in favor of the Rebels.

With pitcher, #29 Ethan Johnson on the mound, Effingham County would hold Mundy’s Mill scoreless the remainder of the game and pick up another run of their own, courtesy of #15 Mason Wake’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Rebels would take a 6-2 lead. Effingham County would go on to win by a final score of 6-2 sweeping their GHSA 6A opening round match up against Mundy’s Mill. Effingham County will face the winner of Lanier versus Allatoona next week.
