Cardinals, Saints Battle In OT, Jonesboro On To Peach State Classic Finals With 68-67 Win Over Cedar
Both the Jonesboro Cardinals and the Cedar Grove Saints were riding four game win streaks coming into Friday night's semi-final match up between the two at the annual Peach State Classic. Jonesboro would go up by as many as eight point early in the first quarter, but the Saints would find their groove and get within one, 22-21, early in the second quarter and the contest would remain close through all four regulation periods, including several lead changes.
Tied up at 58 a piece with seconds to go in the fourth, Jonesboro's Brandon Walker would take the would be game winning shot but come up short and the game would go into overtime. In the OT period, a crucial turnover by the Cardinals as they trailed 66-65, would lead to a foul by the Cardinals but also a technical foul on Cedar for players leaving the bench while the game was still underway.
The Saints' Blake Austin would make 1-2 free throws, while Jonesboro's Jamari smith would miss both technical shots and the Cardinals trailed 67-65 with :14 remaining in the OT period. The technical foul would give the Cardinals possession after the free shots and Walker another chance to win it for Jonesboro and this time he would knock down a three point basket to give the Cardinals a 68-67 lead and they would go to win by that final score.
