Historic State Title Win For Astros As Douglass Defeats Early County 57-51 For Team's First Cham
On Thursday, the Georgia High School Association basketball state championships continued with the Douglass Lady Astros taking on the Early County Bobcats in girls 2A action. The Bobcats would get the game going with an 8-4 run but the Astros would respond with a 5-0 run to take a 9-8 lead but would find themselves trailing 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Douglass would outscore Early County 16-13 to take a 28-25 lead into the locker room at the half. But in the third quarter, Douglass' Nekiyah Thompson (23 pts) would lead the Astros on a 8-2 run to start the period and would maintain the lead as they would be up 41-36 at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats would open up the quarter on a 15-10 run and tie the game at 51-51, but Thompson and the Astros would close out the game on a 6-0 run to pick up the 57-51 win and their first state title in team history. Sophomore Kakayla Timpson would finish with 20 points for Early County. Watch highlights from the game below now!
