Lovejoy's Anaya Boyd, Westlake's Raven Johnson Named To All-USA Georgia Girl's Basketbal
On Wednesday, USA Today High School Sports released its 2018-2019 All-USA State Girl's Basketball Team and here is the results for Georgia . Coach of the Year honors went to the 2018-2019 Georgia High School Association Class 6A Champions Lanier Longhorns' head Coach Tim Slater. In his first season as head coach of the Lady Horns, Slater led Lanier to the program's and the school's first state championship in school history when they defeated the defending state champs, the Lovejoy Wildcats.
Speaking of Lovejoy, junior guard/foward Anaya Boyd was named to the All-USA Girl's Basketball first team. After helping the Wildcats win the GHSA 6A state title in 2017-2018 season, Boyd along with teammate Genesis Bryant positioned the Wildcats to repeat as state champs, however they came up short falling to the previously mentioned Lanier Longhorns. Boyd averaged 12.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assist per game. Joining Boyd on first team is Madison County's Kayla McPhearson who the state's 4A Palyer of the year as well as Gatorade Player of the Year averaging 28 points per game.
Junior Avyonce Carter of Wesleyan helped lead the Wolves to the GHSA 1A Private title game for a chance to win their third straight championship. Deasia Merrill, the senior center for Villa Rica and Dason County's Kaylee Sticker round out the first team. Getting second team honors is the Westlake Lions' own Raven Johnson. The sophomore guard helped lead the the Lions to their second straight GHSA 7A state championship. Joining Johnson is Bria Harmon of Collins Hill, who lost to Westlake in the 2018-2019 championship game, Zoesha Smith of Glynn Academy and Destanee Wright of Dodge County.
