Alpharetta keeps title defense alive, advancing to championship game with win over Norcross
The Alpharetta Raiders are continuing their title defense as they picked up a 3-1 win over Norcross in the Georgia High School Association Class 6A semi-final match, advancing to the state title game for the second consecutive season, however the Blue Devils ensured the Raiders would have to put up a fight to get the win on Saturday.
After taking Set 1, which was relatively close throughout, 25-19, the Raiders would win Set 2 by a final of 25-17. However, the Blue Devils would display resilience in route to a 25-23 win of set three, ending the Raiders consecutive set wins at 30 in a row. However, bouncing back in Set 4, after trailing 10-8, a 17-6 run by the Raiders would lead to them winning the set 25-16 and the match.
"Huge match. Norcross is a phenomenal team, bug hitters, great set over there," Alpharetta community coach, Grace Fossier, said following the Raiders' win on Saturday, praising the Alpharetta players for their efforts. "Our girls came out to play. It was a hard competition but they definitely showed up," Fossier added as she noted some of the individual performances pf Alpharetta players and their ability to bring it all together for a team win.
"It's a team effort and I know that sounds trite, but it is true. These girls see each other day in, day out all season and they have to come in and they have to get along and they have to work. Through the hard times, you play a tough team, you have to rethink a few things , you have to come back and they did a phenomenal job. I'm so excited right now," Fossier said.
Now with the title game set, the Raiders will prepare to take take on North Cobb, who they faced back in August and defeated 2-1, and while high on her players all-around performance this season, in which they are now 34-0, there are still a few areas she would like to see Alpharetta clean up. "We need to serve the ball in, hit the ball in and then everything else just takes care of itself. I believe these girls and as long as we do our part, we're going to be good to go," Fossier said.
