Alpharetta Remains Unbeaten After Picking Up Win Over Roswell, Improves To 3-0 In Region Standings
On Tuesday, the Roswell Hornets and Alpharetta Raiders girls tennis teams faced off in a region match in which both teams entered with no losses in region play, while Alpharetta also had no overall loss and Roswell only one. The Raiders would get the early jump taking the Singles 3 match first, followed by wins in Singles 2 and then Singles one. The Hornets would still the first doubles win taking Doubles 1 but unfortunately for the Hornets, the Raiders had already secured the match victory by winning all three singles matches.
Following the win, Alpharetta coach, Amy Landi said that what has impressed her most thus far this season is the consistency and hard work her girls have played with. “The girls have played really hard to really stay in their matches and settle in and then finishes their matches, especially the region matches where it counts” Landi said. She added that as they get deeper into region matches, she would like the consistency to continue, particularly in the areas of “serving and baseline play” as well as volleys for her doubles teams.
On the other side for Roswell, Hornets coach Derek Shackelford said that onto of the start of the season, what has also impressed him was how well his girls continued to train despite the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down high school sports in spring of 2020 and throughout the summer of 2020. “Tennis is one of the few sports you could actually still play and so this summer, they got out and they were all practicing and hitting and doing drills and so we started out the gate pretty hot,” Shackelford said. As far as areas of improving on down the stretch of the season, Coach Shackelford said he just wants his players to work on “patience”. “Everybody gets worked up too much. Everybody just needs to be patient and let the game come to you and don’t press.”
