Benedictine defense has 6 interception night in first round win over Southwest Dekalb
With the Georgia High School Association football state championship tournament getting underway on Friday, the Benedictine Cadets made the trip from Savannah to Dekalb County to face the Southwest Dekalb Panthers in the opening round of Class 4A. And despite a slow start offensively, the Cadets defense would make their mark early with three first half interceptions, eventually capitalizing and taking a 14-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, the Cadets defense seemingly picked up where they left off, intercepting three more passes by Southwest Dekalb quarterback, Braylon Carter, as Benedictine's Wyatt Estabrook, who ended the night with three total interceptions, would account for two of the picks, including one returned for a touchdown as the Cadets would go on to pick up the 35-13 win.
"I'm really proud of our guys," Benedictine head coach, Danny Britt said after their win on Friday, however noting the Cadets did not have the start to the game they had hoped for as they were coming off of a week off and a full day of traveling from Savannah to Decatur. And while the Benedictine offense need a little more time to get their momentum, the performance of the Cadets' defense was pivotal in their victory.
"You know, that was huge being able to get those interceptions because they were driving, they were moving the ball and they moved the ball consistently from 20 to 20 but once they got inside the red zone, we were able to shut them down and I think that's where most of the interceptions came, so very proud of those guys," Britt said as he praised the play of the Cadets secondary as Zachary Maxwell Jr. had two of their six interceptions.
