Cambridge homecoming celebration ends with 31-19 win over Calhoun

Friday night was a homecoming celebration for the Cambridge Bears as they welcomed the Calhoun Yellow Jackets and looked to move to 5-0 on the season. And while the Bears were able to pick up the 31-19 victory, as expected, the Yellow Jackets, who looked to pick up a bounce back win after their loss to Cartersville last week, did not make the night an easy one for the Bears.

“It was as about as sloppy as a game we could have played but you know, we’ll take the win,” Cambridge head coach, Tyler Jones said after the game as he shared his thoughts on his team’s performance that included an opening drive that resulted in a fumble deep in their own territory, which would be recovered by Calhoun.

However, despite the rough start to the game, the Bears’ defense, would come up with a big stop on the ensuing Calhoun possession that would keep the Yellow Jackets out of the end zone and forcing them to settle for a field goal. “Our defense played their tale off. I mean they bailed us out time after time after time,” Jones said as he praised the Bears defenders for coming up with key stops and acknowledged the positive play on offense as well.

“We were doing really good things on offense and the only time we really got stopped is when we stopped ourselves,” Jones continued as he credited Calhoun for their ability to make it challenging for Cambridge with their rushing attack at times throughout the night. “We have to play better if we want to continue to win,” Jones added, noting that when the Bears play mistake free football, “we’re a really good football team,”.

The Bears will have a bye next week and return to action on September 27 when they travel to Sharpsburg and face East Coweta in their final non-region matchup.
