Chapel Hill Opens Up Season With 2-0 Win Over South Cobb
As the 2021 season has gotten underway, the Chapel Hill Panthers volleyball team was on the road for their first two matches of the season as they were on the road to take on the South Cobb Eagles and Washington Bulldogs at South Cobb High School. The Panthers would start the day with an opening match against the Eagles, who were also beginning their season, and in set one, the contest remained close down to the finish. The largest lead in the set would be two points, which the Panthers held at least three times before going on to win the set 26-24.
Set two would have a similar start as the first set, with Chapel Hill jumping out to a 3-0 lead, but the Eagles would come back to tie the set 4-4. However, from that point, Chapel Hill would go on a 9-0 run to go up 13-4 and eventually win the set in a more convincing fashion as they would take it 25-7. Following the match, Chapel Hill head coach, Lee Spoor said he felt nervousness due to it being the team’s first game played a big role in how his team performed in set one. “I thought it was nerves. It was the opening game of the season,” Spoor said after the opening win.
Spoor noted that his players were initially supposed to play second, however due to the third team not being onsite yet, they moved into the first game without time to warm up. “I don’t think the girls were loose and they were a little bit nervous, then we calmed down and started playing our game in the second set,” Spoor said, adding that he wants to see his team work on communication as they season progresses.
