Collins Hill's Travis Hunter Shocks Nation, Flips From Florida State To Jackson State
On Wednesday, as the 2021 National Early Signing Day got underway, the national watched closely as top football recruits out of the class of 2022 signed their National Letter of Intent to continue their careers at the college of their choice. For many of those players, that decision was made as long as a year ago and Wednesday was just a time for them to make their decision final. But as we all know, until the ink hits the dotted line, when it comes to commitments, it is never a done deal. And that exactly what happened when the number one recruit out of the class of 2022, Travis Hunter (Collins Hill – Suwanee, Georgia) flipped from his Florida State commitment to join the Deion Sanders led Jackson State Tigers.
Arguably one of the biggest and shocking flips in college football history, Hunter toyed with those in attendance at his signing day event as he sported then tossed various team hats, including a Florida State hat. Once the Seminoles cap was thrown to the floor, the crowd erupted in shock and anticipation as to find out where the Collins Hill defensive back was planning to make his home for the next phase of his career. And that is when a Jackson State hat was tossed to Hunter and he placed it on his head, while unzipping his jackets, dawning a Tigers’ “Believe” t-shirt.
“Historically Black Colleges and Universities have a rich history in football. I want to be part of the history, and more, I want to be a part of that future,” Hunter said in a Twitter post in which he explained his decision to choose Sanders’ Jackson State over the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year’s alma mater. On Tuesday during an interview, Sanders had promised that he would “shock the country” on Wednesday with a recruiting move, and that he did as Hunter is the considered highest rated recruit to sign with an HBCU football program.
