'Comradery' and 'leadership' key as Wesminster's title defense season is underway

The Westminster Wildcats boys and girls tennis teams have been some of the most winningest programs in Georgia high school history having won a combined 35 Georgia High School Association State Championships since 1997 with the Westminster boys' team having won 21 since 2000, including the last four titles, and the Westminster girls' programs totaling 16 championships since 1997, with the 2024 title marking their fifth in seven years.
On Tuesday both Wildcats programs were in action as they hosted the Cambridge Bears in their first region matchup of the season and with 2025 off to a great start for the defending champions, 4-1 wins for both boys and girls teams have them sitting unbeaten on the season so far.
"We've got a great group of girls this year. They've really come together and formed some great friendships already, Westminster girls head coach, Liesel Good said following the Lady Wildcats win over Cambridge which included a sweep singles matchups with, freshman, Mary Kate Monk leading the way in line one.
"Everybody comes out to support each other and there's just great comradery and having lots of fun and we're just happy to get a great region win today and hopefully pull off another one in a couple of days," Good said of the Lady Wildcats, who are currently ranked No. 1 in Georgia and No. 9 nationally in UTR rankings.
Meanwhile, for the boys program, head coach Ralph Geeza credits the start to the Wildcats' season to returning players who have "stepped up" coming into the season. "I've been very happy with the way that they've stepped into new positions on the team and new leadership roles," Geeza said of how impressed he has been with his players especially in Tuesday's win over the Bears.
"Today's win against Cambridge was a really good test. Cambridge is a really strong region opponent and we won 4-1 and several matches went to third sets which is always an indicator of how close the match is so a 4-1 score might be a little bit indicative that it wasn't that difficult but it really was," Geeza noted.
Both teams will be in action on Thursday when they take on Kell.
