'Executing fundamentals' leads Trinity Christian back to GHSA quarterfinals
The Trinity Christian Lions flag football team has once again found themselves in familiar territory as they have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Georgia High School Association flag football state championship tournament for the third consecutive season as they opened up the tournament on Tuesday with an 18-0 win over Locust Grove in the tournament opener, followed by a 19-0 win over Jonesboro in the round of 16.
“Honestly it’s the preparation that we’ve put in the entire season and just executing the fundamentals, that’s what we’ve been stressing the entire time,” Trinity Christian head coach, Kayla Freund said following the Lions two shutout wins on Tuesday. And while she gave high praise to Locust Grove and Jonesboro for the talent they possess, Freund credited her players for their ability to “execute our game plan and just staying disciplined in position was a big part of that,” Freund added.
Now back in the quarterfinals for the third straight season, the Lions will face Loganville and look to get into the semifinals for the first time in program history and Freund said that coming up short as they lost to St. Pius in the quarterfinals last season as given her girls all the motivation they need as they will take Wednesday to prepare for Loganville. “They have been working since the summer and offseason putting in a lot of extra work, specifically because of that moment. They remember how they felt in that instance and they don’t want to feel that again,” Freund said of the Lions’ mindset coming into this season.
And when the Lions take on Loganville on Thursday, Freund says all she wants her players to do is stick to their game plan. “We have to do anything special or fancy or anything different than what we’ve done the entire season which is again, just executing the fundamentals,” Freund added.
