Galloway punches ticket to region championship game with win over Mount Paran
As Georgia High School Association basketball region tournaments continue, the Galloway Scots girls basketball team took on the Mount Paran Eagles in the Class 1A Division I Region 5 semifinals on Thursday in a rematch from their December matchup in which the Scots won 62-51.
Looking to set the tone early, the Eagles would take the early lead in the first quarter as they outscored the Scots 7-4 in the early minutes of the period, however the momentum would swing in favor of the Galloway as they closed out the quarter outscoring Mount Paran 7-2 to take a 11-9 lead into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Galloway's momentum continued as junior Taryn Thompson would score 12 of her 27 points in the period to help the Scots outscore Mount Paran 22-8 in the period and take a 33-17 lead into the locker room at halftime. And while the Eagles would win both quarters of the second half, they would only outscore Galloway 13-12 in the third quarter and 20-13 in the fourth quarter, which would not be enough to push them over the hump as the Scots would pick up the 58-50 win.
"We always try to talk about starting games well," Galloway head coach, Kiesha Brown said after Thursday win as she credited her players and their efforts, particularly on the defensive end of the court. "They did a good job of getting warmed up I guess but like staying in the flow of the game," Brown continued expressing the importance of her players executing good defense, which she noted "is my background,".
Brown would also highlight how in sync the Scots played, which she believes played a vital role in the Galloway's win on Thursday as well as throughout the season. "When you get those five people that are on the court and they're working in unison with each other it just make it pretty difficult," Brown said of Scots' defensive impact on the Mount Paran offense.
