Grayson extends win streak to 20 in a row with 59-44 win over Archer
After dropping their season opener, the defending champs, Grayson Rams, have been full steam ahead heading into their region showdown with the Archer Tigers on Friday night, just 21 days after their previous meeting in which the Rams held on for a 67-64 win at home.
With Archer hosting the second meeting of the season between the two region rivals, the first quarter would come to an end with the Rams holding onto a four point lead as they ended the period up 19-15. In the second quarter, the Tigers would open up on a 4-0 run, before the Rams would close out the period on 18-6 run to take a 37-25 lead into the locker room at the half.
Keeping momentum behind them in the third quarter, the Rams would go up by as many as 21 points and eventually outscore Archer 16-9 in the period to close it out with a 53-34 lead to start the fourth quarter, which would be their lowest point producing period, as the Tigers would outscore them 10-6, but that would not be enough to overcome the large deficit as the Rams picked up their 2oth consecutive win.
:"I think we get film, we get an opportunity to watch and see where we can improve," Grayson head coach, Tim Slater said after Friday's win, explaining the Rams took advantage of film study of their previous matchup with Archer. "I think there's things we cleaned up from the last game," Slater added, also noting the absence of Archer's Mearah Whitehead was also a significant factor. "I think any time the other team's best player is off the floor, that helps," Slater added.
With Friday's win helping Grayson improve to 20-1 overall and 8-0 in the region standings, Slater credits his players for their "belief" as a contributing factor for the season the Rams are having to this point. "Not many kids would have the fortitude to be a part of a program that went 32-0, wins state and competes nationally," Slater said, praising his players for not being "satisfied" with last season's accomplishments.
"That's not this group of kids. These kids want to fight and prove that they're every bit as good as any team that's ever put on a Grayson uniform. We see a lot of that from them right now and it's really impressive and it's a lot of fun to coach," Slater added. Grayson will return to action when they host Grovetown in region play.
