'Growing confidence' key as Campbell picks up 5th straight win after defeating Holy Innocents
Eight games into the 2024-2025 season, the Campbell Spartans Girls lacrosse team has found themselves off to a similar start to last season as they improved to 6-2, the same same record they had a year ago through their first eight games, after they defeated the Holy Innocents Golden Bears on Friday for their fifth straight win.
"We've had to cultivate a lot of brand new players in position that they typically didn't play, so it's just like growing confidence, making sure we play as a team, making sure every rep we do counts and making sure that we know our job and we're doing it well" Campbell head coach, Alexa DeCristofaro, said after the Spartans win on Friday, describing what she believes has contributed to the start of their season.
On Friday, after battling the Golden Bears to a a 4-4 tie through the start of the second quarter, the "growing confidence" DeCristofaro spoke of began to settle in for the Spartans as they would outscore Holy Innocents 6-3 in the period as senior captains Lila Marble, who finished with 10 goals, and Ava Garmong, who added six goals, combined for five of the Spartans' goals in the period.
"When you have two players that can read each others minds and body language, it is priceless," DeCristofaro said of the two midfield/attack players who have a long history of playing alongside one another, which DeCristofaro believes has been vital to their chemistry. "They literally don't have to look at each other sometimes and they know when to pass so it really is like a special connection that can help the whole team," DeCristofaro said of Marble and Garmong.
Now with 10 games remaining in the regular season, the Spartans will look to keep momentum behind them in hopes of reaching the post season for the third straight season and get over the hump of advancing beyond the second round, DeCristofaro believes "fundamentals" will be one of the most important factors to help Campbell reach their goals.
"You can't over exaggerate how important it is to be able to pick up a ground ball on the first try, basically making sure every pass is a good pass, making sure you're locking eyes with the person that's transitioning down the field, that you're helping your teammate if you see that they're about to get doubled," DeCristofaro said of things she hopes for her player to continue to improve on this season. "You can be the best team in the world but if you don't have the fundamentals and you don't play together, it all falls apart," the Campbell head coach said.
Campbell returns to action on Tuesday when they host Riverwood.
