Harrison picks up bounce back win in extras, defeats Cherokee 9-8
On Saturday, the Harrison Hoyas picked up their 14th win of the season, to improve to 14-4 on the season after defeated Cherokee 9-8, in a game that would require the Hoyas battling through extra innings before picking up the victory. The win would also put Harrison right back on track after they had their nine game win streak snapped the night before in a 7-4 loss to region opponent Hillgrove.
“We had a tough game last night. Hillgrove’s a great ball club and they got us 7-4, great game, and when you turn around in 16 hours, you have to just see what the girls are made of,” Harrison head coach, Richard Dombrowsky, said of his team’s performance in a game in which they lost an early 4-0 lead and fell into a 7-4 hole.
“We came out swinging and it was great, had a great first inning, they answered right back because they’re a great ball club,” Dombrowsky said as he credited Cherokee for their great play on Saturday, that would lead to them tying the game to force extra innings after the Hoyas regained the lead.
“We answered back, nine inning game and two outs nobody on and hit, hit, hit, it’s just really exciting. So proud of the girls,” Dombrowsky said of his team’s efforts to come out on top after back to back days of tough matchups. And while the Hoyas will have a couple of days off before returning to action when they face Osborne in a region matchup, Dombrowsky says his players simply need to take it step by step.
“We just have to get a little bit better each day. What we just talked about after the game was it’s not going from a .200 hitter to a .600 hitter. It’s little things, first steps, transfers how you play catch, how you show up to play. Those little things are what we’re going to keep grinding on. It’s what’s got us here and we’re going to try to do it the rest of the way,” Dombrowsky added.
