High Flying Hillgrove Defense Helps Hawks Pick Up 32-14 Win Over Marietta
In a pivotal region match up between the Hillgrove Hawks and the Marietta Blue Devils, Hillgrove would come out the victors as they topped the Blue Devils 32-14. Despite the 32 points put up by the Hawks, it was the play by their defense that was the talk of the night, forcing seven turnovers including five interceptions, three for junior Reggie Givhan and two for senior Jaylen Royals, one which he returned for a touchdown. Both Givhan and Royals are mainly starters on the offensive side of the ball for Hillgrove, but injuries to the Hawks' starting cornerbacks had Coach Byron Slack move the two wide receivers over to the defensive side of the ball and it payed off big time. Givhan was also responsible for several pass break ups and one forced fumble. The Hawks defensive front played their role as well, applying pressure on Marietta quarterback Tyler Hughes all throughout the night, forcing him out of the pocket. Offensively, it was a relatively quiet night for quarterbacks Theo Tatum and Chase Mccravy, but senior running back, TJ Thomas rushed for two touchdowns in the Hillgrove win.
