Holy Innocents Celebrates Senior Night With Win Over Riverwood
The Holy Innocents Golden Bears wrestling team hosted the Riverwood Raiders in a dual match on Wednesday, which was also their senior night celebration. Although the Golden Bears would pick up the match win 49-18, largely in part to having to forfeit at several weight classes, midway through the match, the Raiders would find themselves leading due to the forfeits by Holy innocents. Things would turn around for the Golden Bears when Arthur Martinez would win by pin in the 126 weight class to put Holy Innocents back up 22-18. Next in the 132 weight class, Rhett Sherk would hiself trailing 7-4 with seconds to go in the third round but would score in those final seconds to force a decisive final round in which he would go on to pick up the win and the Golden Bears would go on to defeat Riverwood 49-18.
Following the match, I spoke with Coach Davis about the challenges wrestling has had due to the COVID-19 virus and he explained that within the sports, throughout the state, wrestling programs have all witnessed a bit of negativity due to the sport being such a high contact sport. However he explained that programs are working hard to reduce risk from "cleaning" their mats to the use of sanitizer prior to each match as each wrestler was required to wipe themselves down before they wrestled. "We understand how to take care of our bodies and understand, we've always done things in here to stay clean because it has always been a stigma to the sport. So we work hard to disprove that," Davis said following the match.
