Holy Innocents tops Marietta in Hawks-Naismith matchup
On Saturday, the Atlanta Hawks hosted their annual Naismith Tipoff Classic featuring boys and girls high school basketball teams from the metro Atlanta area, including the Holy Innocents Golden Bears and Marietta Blue Devils, who both entered the matchup at 2-1 on the season.
The final girls matchup of the day featured several younger players making their way up the recruiting ranks including Marietta freshman, Leah DeWitt, who finished with a team high 17 points, and Holy Innocents freshman Loriel Murray, who finished with 13 points for the Golden Bears, led by senior and Stanford commit, Hailee Swain's 22 point night.
Despite being a team of all freshmen and sophomores, the Blue Devils held their own early going up by as many as four points in the first quarter, however, the Golden Bears would close out the opening period with a 17-16 lead after trailing 14-10 earlier in the quarter. In the second quarter, the Blue Devils would briefly regain the lead, but it would be the Golden Bears back in front by three points as they led 27-24 at the half.
Keeping momentum behind them having a dominant performance in the third quarter, the Golden Bears would outscore Marietta 16-4 to close the period with 43-28 lead and despite a better fourth quarter outing by the Blue Devils, they would still be outscored by Holy Innocents 22-19, as the Golden Bears picked up the 65-47 win.
"I'm starting to see us come together as a unit," Swain said after Saturday's win helped the Golden Bears improve to 3-1 on the season. "We're starting to move the ball more and actually run the offense to get the defense to shift so that our shots are easier," Swain added about the improvements the Golden Bears are starting to make.
Holy Innocents will return to action on Monday when they take on Bolles at the Inside Exposure Thanksgiving Classic.
