Kennesaw Mountain defeats Wheeler for season series sweep, third straight win
On Saturday, the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs baseball team hosted both the South Cobb Eagles and Wheeler Wildcats in a round robin style day of action on the diamond for the three teams. And while the Mustangs matchup with the Eagles was a non-region game that resulted in Kennesaw Mountain picking up the 14-3 win, their face off with Wheeler would have more important implications as the region dual would be their third meeting of the season between the two, with the Mustangs having won the previous two.
Looking to complete the regular season sweep over the Wheeler, the Mustangs would explode for 15 runs in the bottom of the inning to pick up the 15-0 win over the Wildcats as they would get a five strike out performance on the mound from Tyson Harmon. Saturday's two wins would extended the Mustangs win streak to three in a row, however more importantly, the win over Wheeler would help Kennesaw Mountain improve to 4-2 in the region standings, positioning them into a three way tie for first along with Cherokee, who they begin a three game series with on Monday, and Walton, who took two of three from them just over a week ago.
"Momentum is so big," Kennesaw Mountain head coach George Hansen, said following Saturday's two wins as he spoke on the importance of momentum for he team heading into their final 11 games that include nine region games. "We're excited that we're moving into this week before spring break in a three way tie with Cherokee and Walton for first place," Hansen added. And with the bulk of their remaining games being region matchups, Hansen made it clear that his team will have to adhere to some of the golden rules of baseball.
"If you play good defense, if you move runners over and if you have pitching that gives you a chance, you can do some good things and right now our pitching is probably the strength of where we are right now," Hansen said as he spoke of Landon Meng, who Hansen praised for "pitching well" for the Mustangs all season, Pete Jezerinac, who pitched a perfect game for Kennesaw Mountain in their 17-0 win over Wheeler on Thursday and Harmon, who got the win on Saturday against Wheeler.
