Langston Hughes, Winston Salem Christian Winners On Day Two Of "She Got Game Classic"
On Saturday, the second day of girls basketball action got underway at the 2021 She Got Game Classicand featured match ups that included the two time defending Georgia High School Association Class 2A state champions the Douglass Astros, taking on 2020 6A semifinalist, the Langston Hughes Panthers. The Panthers would take control of the game early as they would open up on a 10-1 run before Astros guard Ashuntee Weems knocked down a 3-point basket to cut into the Panthers' lead. Despite Weems and the Astros' efforts to slow the Panthers down, Langston Hughes forward, Raven Thompson's (19 points), presence in the paint would prove to be difficult for the Astros' defenders. The Panthers would also have success from the perimeter as senior guard, Damesha Cain (14 points) would knock down four 3-point baskets in the Langston Hughes win. the Panthers would go on to pick up the 74-39 win. Johnson would get the game's Most Valuable Players recogniation.
In the next game, national teams would clash as the Winston Salem Christian Lions out of North Carolina and a 2020 state championship semifinalist took on the American-Heritage Patriots out of Florida. and the 2020 5A state champs. The two teams would go back and fourth with multiple lead changes in the first quarter, but it would be the Patriots up 15-14 at the end of the opening period. In the second quarter, the Lions would go on a 14-3 run to take a 28-18 lead and would go on to close out the first half with a 33-26 lead at the half. Despite several runs by the Patriots in the third and fourth quarters, the Lions would hold on to pick up the 58-47 win. Winston Salen's Taylor Henderson would get the game's MVP honors.
