Late Nyqua Lett TD To Derrick White Leads Creekside To 27-20 Win Over Westlake
There’s rivalries and then there’s Westlake versus Creekside, and on Friday with both teams coming into the night off big wins on the season, stakes for the bragging rights for the top team in South Fulton were even higher. The Seminoles had a bye last week, but opened their season with an upset win over top ranked Grayson, while Westlake opened their season with a win over Archer in week one and then a big road win over Colquitt County last Friday.
Despite having a week off, it did not take long for the Seminoles to get things going offensively as they would take a 6-0 first quarter lead thanks to a Cameron Burch rushing touchdown. Big play from the Creekside defense would keep Westlake off the scoreboard throughout the first half while picking up another touchdown, courtesy of a Camari Davis rushing score.
The Lions would eventually get things going for themselves on the offensive end as they picked up some momentum thanks to a couple of RJ Johnson first down passes to Cayden Lee, including one that would set up a first and goal for Westlake. The Lions would cap the drive with a Jayden Thomas rushing touchdown and trail 12-7 to close out the third period of play. The Lions would later get another rushing score at the start of the fourth quarter thanks to Thomas and take a 13-12 lead, their first lead of the night.
The two teams would exchange a couple more scores and eventually would be tied up 20-20 with 2:28 to go in the game, but with 1:34 left, Creekside quarterback, Nyqua Lett would find Derrick White in the corner of the end zone for what eventually be the game winning touchdown, as the Seminoles would defeat Westlake 27-20. Following the game, Creekside head coach Maurice Dixon said of his team, “we just came out here and played Creekside football. That’s just being physical, playing fast, flying around, no negative plays, no penalties, and at the end, we got a shot to win.”
