Lovett notches fifth straight win as team begins to gel

Lovett Lions celebrate point against Whitefield Academy

The 2024 Georgia High School Association Volleyball season is relatively early and for some teams, the kinks are still being ironed out, including for the Lovett Lions. After getting off to an early 2-0 start, the Lions would stumble with back to back losses but have since found themselves winners of five straight matches.

“We’ve got a lot of new girls on our team and a lot of returners, which has been awesome for us to really kind of work on what our consistent lineup is going to be,” Lovett head coach, Mason Sutherland said after the Lions picked up a 2-0 win over Whitefield Academy.

After picking up their second win of the night defeating Kings Ridges, Sutherland shared that the Lions are still trying out various versions of their lineup due to the “depth” of their roster. “We’re able to change things up and figure out who’s gelling at different times, which has been a real win for our team this year,” Sutherland said as she explained the Lions are still working on assembling the “right starting lineup” will be.

“We’re working towards having a few people able to play that are really able to jump in and get it going from the start,” Sutherland continued. And as the Lions look to continue with their momentum, the Lovett head coach believes that having a “consistent group” who understands everyone’s responsibilities, will be an important factor for a successful season.

“We’ve got a lot of youthful players on the team in terms of freshman and sophomores, which is really great for the program, and the juniors and seniors are really having to step up into those leadership roles,” Sutherland added. The Lions will look to keep their stride when they host rival Westminster and St. Pius on Thursday.
