Lovett Split On The Day, Top GAC Spartans 2-0, Fall To North Cobb Christian
On Tuesday, the Lovett Lions hosted the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans and the North Cobb Christian Eagles and would end the day with a split, defeating the Spartans 2-0 and falling to NCC 2-1, improving their record to 4-2 to start the season. In their opening match with GAC, the Lions found themselves having to play from behind throughout both sets, something head coach, Katie Johnson spoke on after the win.
“We played smarter at the net,” Johnson said of the adjustments the Lions had to make to come from behind and take the lead in both sets. “We made a lot of eras at the net the first set that we compensated for in the next one. I’d say our serving was more aggressive than what we’ve been doing and I think that kept us in the game and kept them out of system a lot more which helped us be in system on a lot of those free balls they were sending in,” Johnson added.
The Lions would defeat the Spartans 25-22 in set one after trailing early in the set and they would take set two 25-21 after trailing by as many as three when they were down 7-4 early in the set. But as Johnson mentioned, once the Lions made the necessary adjustments, they began to get into a rhythm as setter Cackie Watt would start directing the offense which would lead to Emma Duffield leading the way for Lovett in kills.
