Midtown Continues Tuning Up For State With APS Meet Performance
With the Georgia High School Association Swim and Dive state championships just weeks away, teams are getting in their final meets to tune up and in some cases, look to still qualify swimmers and divers for the championship weekend. On Wednesday, the Atlanta Public Schools Athletics Swim and Dive meet featuring several APS teams took place and the Midtown Knights took advantage of the meet to place more swimmers into the state meet and in particular freshman, Alex Vinciquerra, who qualified thanks to his finish in the Boys 100 Yard Butterfly.
Vinciquerra’s placing marked the first male swimmer or diver for the Knights to qualify for the state meet this season, something which has Midtown head coach, Adrienne Wesley, feeling good. “We just made a 100 Fly state cut, so that was really good tonight,” Wesley said of Vinciquerra’s performance. And with just a couple of meets remaining for the Knights, Wesley hopes Midtown can continue to have swimmers and divers make the cut. “Make as many state cuts as we can before we get to our state meet,” Wesley said as the Knights look to build off last season in which at least one of their qualifiers medaled. “We want to make a follow up at states with that,” Wesley added.
Overall the Knights were dominant from the start of the meet picking up wins in seven of the first eight events including the boys and girls 200 medley relays followed wins in both the boys and girls 200 freestyles and the boys and girls 200 individual medley’s as well as the boys and girls 50 freestyles.
