The Georgia High School Association girls soccer state championship tournament opened up on Tuesday and the Midtown Knights hosted the Central Lions in the opening round of the Class 4A bracket. In a match dominated by the Knights, Midtown would score two early goals including one by freshman Leo Powell, who would end the night with three goals, and close out the first half with a 4-0 lead.
As the second half got underway, Midtowns dominance continued as they added six more more goals, including two by senior, Ella Gagnon, who would also finish with three goals, in route to a 10-0 win to advance to the second round of the tournament. "At first we came out kind of slow," Midtown head coach, Blair Barksdale said following Tuesday's victory, praising her players for their efforts in quickly finding their rhythm after tough matches last week against North Atlanta and Decatur.
"The way they clicked back in, you know came out a little slow but then they realized they needed to up their game and the intensity a little bit and them doing that themselves is what really impressed me," Barksdale said. "That means that when we get into those tough games, that they'll be able to mentally focus and get back on track," Barksdale added.
The Knights will now take on Cambridge next Tuesday in the second round of the tournament.
