Miller Grove Edges Stephenson 34-27, Handing Jaguars Their First Loss of the Season
On Friday, the Miller Grove Wolverines hosted the Stephenson Jaguars in a region match-up in which the Wolverines looked to bounce back from their first region loss a week ago to Arabia Mountain. Miller Grove would make the first statement as they would score off of a Jayden Brown rushing touchdown on the opening drive of the game, but the Jaguars would respond on the ensuing kickoff as Cordell Andrews would return the kick for a touchdown as the game would be tied 7-7. The Jaguars would later take a 14-7 first quarter lead after a Marte Barton touchdown pass to Andrews, but just before the half, Miller Grove would tie the game 14-14 after a Jakobi Presley rushing touchdown.
In the third quarter, the Wolverines would come out swinging as they would score 21 points in the quarter, including a Brown punt return for a touchdown, a Brown rushing touchdown and an interception returned for a touchdown by Cayman Spalding as Miller Grove went up 34-14. The Jaguars would battle back adding two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a Barton pass to Rahim Diarrasouba and a Devin Ingram touchdown, as Stephenson trailed 34-27. The Jaguars would get a couple more attempts to tie the game or take the lead but the Wolverines defense would stand tall, successfully stopping Stephenson.
Following the game, Miller Grove head coach, Melvin Brown, credited his players for fighting until the end of the game. “We tried to give it away at the end, but we kept fighting,” Coach Brown said of his players’ efforts to hold on for the win. “One thing about these young men, they’re resilient, they’re going to keep fighting. When our backs are against the wall, we’re going to keep fighting. That’s all I ever ask of these young me,” Brown added. The win improves the Wolverines to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the region standings, while handing Stephenson their first loss of the season.
