Mount Paran defeats Mount Vernon in extra innings behind 13 strikeout night from Madee Carroll
On Monday, the Georgia High School Association Class 1A Division I Region 5 tournament got underway with the Mount Vernon Mustangs hosting the Mount Paran Eagles in a matchup that would need extra innings before a winner would be decided as the Eagles would pick up the 10-8 win in the 10th inning.
“It was a tough game, but what I learned about this team tonight is they kept punching back,” Mount Paran head coach, Greg Giles said of the Eagles’ performance in Monday’s win. “We’d get down and keep coming back, get down, keep coming back and they stayed with the program and finally we were able to win it at the end, so I’m very proud of them for their efforts of not giving up,” Giles added.
As the two teams battled back and forth through the night, Mount Paran would get a huge lift in the circle when senior pitcher, Madee Carroll, who would finish with 13 strikeouts, took over pitching duties three pitchers into the bottom of the third inning. “It was one of the best performances anybody could ever say,” Giles said of Carroll, who suffered an injury earlier in the season.
“I’ve coached a long time and it was one of the best performances Madee Carroll or any pitcher I’ve had has done,” Giles said as he praised the right hand pitcher for efforts in the win which sets them up to face Wesleyan on Tuesday. “Wesleyan is a great team this year and they can hit up and down the lineup, so our pitching is going to be paramount and how we can move the ball,” Giles said, adding the Eagles will also have to have a good outing at the plate.
“We have to stay on their pitcher a little bit longer. The last time we faced Wesleyan, we gave into the pitcher, we’re not going to that this time. We’re going to stay on the pitches longer and try to put them in play with authority. Wesleyan is a good team, we’ve got our hands full, but our team’s riding a little bit of a wave now, we’ll see what happens,” Giles said.
