North Gwinnett Hands Alexander First Loss With 64-56 "Lemon Street" Win
On Monday, the annual Lemon Street Classic, featuring teams from around the Atlanta metro area as well as Florida and South Carolina, continued with a full slate of games including the North Gwinnett Bulldogs, who were coming in at 8-3 overall, against the Alexander Cougars, who headed into the match up at 7-0 on the season. The game got off with two teams keeping the contest close early on in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs would close out the period with an 18-13 lead.
The second quarter would see North Gwinnett outscoring Alexander 13-10 to take a 31-23 lead at the half. However, in the third quarter, the Cougars would have momentum swing in their direction as they would outscore the Bulldogs 18-12 and would trail 43-41 heading into the fourth quarter. But in the final period of play, North Gwinnett would outscore Alexander 21-15 in route to a 64-56 win.
The win would give the Bulldogs their first three game win streak of the season, something they had struggled to do despite being 8-3 heading into Monday’s game. “We’ve battled through some adversity in particularly because we’re missing some guys right now,” North Gwinnett head coach Matt Garner said following their win on Monday. Garner would also praise team captains Thomas Allard and RJ Godfrey for their leadership so far this season.
“Our two captains [Allard and Godfrey] have led, not just statistically, obviously, they’re playing really well, but just as leaders and captains and they’re pulling guys along with them. So from a maturity aspect, those two guys, have grown up a lot in the last week or so and I couldn’t be more proud of them right now,” Garner said of his two leaders in Allard and Godfrey. The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday once again in the classic when they face Langston Hughes in look for their fourth consecutive win.
