PSN Spotlight: Sandy Creek Patriots building with defensive foundation
The Sandy Creek Patriots are gearing up for their first matchup next week against Mundy's Mill as they begin their second season under the direction of head coach, Brandon Carter. "It's definitely an exciting time. Not only for myself, but even for my staff," Carter said as the Patriots get set to get the 2024-2025 Georgia High School Association baseball season underway.
In his first season as Sandy Creek's head coach, Carter led the Patriots to a 15-9-1 season and their second straight region championship and Carter's first region title as a head coach. "We're definitely excited about year two. You know, last year was a year for me to actually just kind of see how things worked as far as how things operate being at a new school, but year two is more time to go ahead and implement some of the things that we like to do," Carter said.
"We're ready to get going, ready to show exactly what we can do and leave our mark on the program," which Carter said, noting he believes as long as the players and his staff can remain on the same page, the Patriots will be headed in the right direction. "This year, coming into it, we're putting a lot more accountability on them as far as ownership of the program. This is your program and we're only go as far as you take it," Carter said of he and his staff's message to their players about building the program, which defense will be part of the foundation.
"I'm a real big proponent of pitching and defense is what wins. You can be real opportunistic on offense if you can score but being able to stop someone from scoring is pretty mush what allows you to be a top notch team and so that's one thing I want to make sure or kind of hang our hat on. When people come to play Sandy Creek, they're going to know that we're going to pitch and we're going to play defense," Carter said.
