Team chemistry will be 'a big part' of Jefferson success

Jefferson Dragons softball during scrimmage against Franklin County

The Jefferson Dragons softball team will get their 2024 season underway on Thursday when they travel to take on Savannah Christian. Looking to build off their 2023 season in which they finished 19-8 overall and 13-4 in region play and a Georgia High School Association state championship tournament berth, the Dragons head into their second season under head coach, Allan Bailey.

“It’s always fun to get going officially,” Bailey said as the Dragons wrapped up a scrimmage against Franklin County on Tuesday as they prepare for their season opener against Savannah Christian. And while, Tuesday’s tune up with Franklin County was the Dragons first competitive feel for the season, Bailey explained his players have been working throughout the summer, whether together as a team or with their respective summer programs.

“We’ve been going all summer,” Bailey continued as he detailed how his players come together at least three days a week throughout the summer for various workouts and team building activities despite the busy schedule they have with their respective summer programs. “Summertime is a great way for us to evaluate, build our team for the season and still have some fun times,” Baily added.

Now with their sights set on Thursday’s season opener, Bailey says the Dragons are looking to have a productive season at the plate and on the mound. “Our offense is something that typically carries us, we’ve returned our entire pitching staff from last year, that’s really a strength of our team and then with defense, we feel really strong abut all three phases of the game and so if we do all those things well, we should be a team to be reckoned with for sure,” Bailey said.

And when asked what he believes will be keys to a successful season for Jefferson, “I just think if we hit the ball, stay together because I feel like if we stay together, it’s going to be hard for anybody outside of here to come in here and beat us. So if we hit and play some good defense and stay together I think it’s going to be a great year,” Bailey added.
