After dropping their season opener over the weekend, the Westlake lions were back in action for their home opener as they hosted the Creekside Seminoles, who opened up their season with a win over the weekend. The Lions would take control early in the first quarter as they would go up by as many as 10 points with a 16-6 lead and eventually leading by 11 at the end of the opening period.

The second quarter would see the Lions increase their lead by as many as 25 points as they would take a 45-20 lead into the locker room at the half. The second half would also be when Westlake’s Jalal McKie, who finished with a game high 22 points, reach 1,000 career points in his final season of high school basketball. The Lions would control the game throughout the second half in route a 75-55 win.

Following the game, Westlake head coach, Darron Rogers said it was good to see his guys bounce back from their season opening loss with the win on Thursday night. “We feel good about it. I thought the guys came out and they worked real hard after the loss we had. We got a little more focused and the guys came in and had one of their best weeks of practice,” Rogers said of his players’ preparation for Thursday’s game.

Rogers also spoke on Mckie’s career accomplishment of reaching 1,000 career points. “We’re very proud of him. He’s a great student, just a great person, our team leader and for him to reach 1,000 points, to get that milestone, it’s huge,” Rogers said.
