Whitefield Academy advances to area championship after 'disciplined' win over Mount Vernon
On Wednesday, the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack volleyball team was back in action and took one step closer to claiming a region title as they picked up a 3-0 win over the Mount Vernon Mustangs in the Georgia High School Association Class 1A Area 6 tournament semifinals. Throughout the night, the Wolfpack pretty much controlled each set from the opening serves, however the Mustangs would manage to find themselves within a point or two, and even having the lead a few times in sets one and two, however Whitefield would stay composed and pull away in each set.
“We are just focusing on playing really disciplined volleyball so we focused on the small things, we focus on being able to cover, getting our serves in, hitting our spots and again, just staying super disciplined so we’re able to play point one to point 25 and it’s all the same,” Whitefield head coach Courtney Ledford said after Wednesday’s win. Having faced the Mustangs during the regular season and defeating them 2-0 and understanding that they would come into Tuesday’s matchup giving the Wolfpack their best shot, Ledford said she simply reminded her players to do as they have been all season and remember that “every game is just as important as the next so we look at it as a step on the way to the goal,” which for the Wolfpack is to be competing for the state title in November.
“We’re not overlooking any team. We know each team comes into the gym with a certain amount of skill, a certain level and they’re wanting it just as much as we are,” Ledford added as they now turn their attention to Mount Pisgah, they only team to defeat them in area play, in the championship round of the area tournament. “They’re a tough team but I think we’ll play them well,” Ledford said of facing Mount Pisgah.
