Whitefield Academy stays in race for region title with 35-0 win over Landmark Christian
With their fourth straight win on Friday night, the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack football team improved to 6-2 overall and most importantly, 3-0 in region play as they defeated Landmark Christian 35-0 as their defense produced their first shutout of the season and was responsible for one of their five touchdowns.
"You know Landmark did a really good job with their game plan. We got in the red area three times and only came away with one touchdown," Whitefield Academy head coach, Robert Walsh said after the Wolfpack win in which they struggled in the first half to find their offensive rhythm, however played well defensively all night.
"Thankfully out defense, Coach Kruger, Coach Bentley and Coach Hawkins, they did a heck of a job preparing our boys and we were able to create some takeaways and even have a defensive score so proud of the defensive side of the ball definitely," Walsh said as he praised the Wolfpack defensive performance, which included an interception returned for a touchdown by Jackson Wallace that would help them take a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.
Offensively, the Wolfpacks only score early in the second quarter when quarterback Harrison Brantley would connect with wide receiver, Parker Shim that led to a 7-0 lead and it would not be until the fourth quarter in which Whitefield Academy's offense would get some momentum behind them after their defense forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession, a 20-yard touchdown run by Amos Robinson would lead to a 21-0 lead for the Wolfpack.
Later, the Whitefield Academy would come up with another interception courtesy of Ben Yarbough and that would lead to another score thanks to Brantley and Shim connecting once again as the Wolfpack would go up 28-0. Their final score of the night would come on the ground as Mason Hollingsworth would rush for his only touchdown of the night.
And as for the Wolfpack failing to capitalize off of multiple positive drives in the the first half and third quarter, penalties were the biggest obstacles for Whitefield and Walsh used one word to explain how the Wolfpack needs to address and correct the problems they faced on Friday.
"Discipline. I mean that's our number one pillar when I first got here and tonight we were not the most disciplined football team and that's on me. We have to learn from it and grow from it," Walsh said of the Wolfpack's areas of concern ahead of their final two matchups with Walker next week followed by their regular season finale, which could eventually be for the region championship, against an opponent to be determined.
