Whitefield "Determination" Helps Propel Them To 3-1 Win Over Campbell
On Thursday the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack volleyball team was on the road at the Campbell Spartans in a non-region match up as both teams looked to bounce back from losses earlier in the week. While the Spartans looked to pick up their first win of the season, the Wolfpack at 2-2 looked to get back above .500 with a win. The opening set would be controlled by Whitefield most of the way as they would win it 25-15, however set two would have a different story.
After Whitefield would jump out to a 10-5 lead, the Spartans would go on a 9-4 run to tie up the set at 14 all and then outscore the Wolfpack down the stretch 11-7 to win the set 25-21. The two teams would have a close battle in the third set, but after another 14 all tie, Whitefield would pull away with an 11-2 run to take the set by a final of 25-16. Set four would see the Wolfpack play with more dominance as they would jump out to an early 7-1 lead and take the set 25-9.
After the match, Whitefield head coach, Courtney Ledford, said that with the season still in its early phase, “we’re really working on what works best for us, putting the girls in some different formations”. And while the Wolfpack may have been trying to work through situations when the Spartans battled them tough in sets two and three, Ledford added that her players “have a lot of heart. They have a lot of determination and we just try to stay positive. We’re here to compete, we’re here to play and we’re here to have fun and they know if we have a bad set, we shake that off and focus on what we can control and that’s the set in front of us”.
Whitefield will be back in action on Saturday in tournament play and Campbell will face Sprayberry next Tuesday.
