On Saturday, the Woodward Academy War Eagles track and field teams captured the Georgia High School Association Class 5A, Region 4 championships as the defending champion girls team cruised to victory with 209 points, 55 points ahead of second place Chamblee, and the boys totaled 135 points to hold off Decatur, who finished in second with 130.50 points.
"What I'm seeing out of the kids is right now they're just committed to the workouts, they're peaking at the right time," Woodward head coach, Ryan Davis said during Saturday's meet, praising the War Eagles their efforts to continue improving throughout the season. "They're working hard with the workouts, taking care of their bodies, doing all the things you need to do at this time of the season," Davis added.
The War Eagles championship wins began on Friday as they picked up several first place finishes in field events including Cameron Dean winning the boys triple jump (48-3.50) and long jump (21-10), Alexadria Tookes winning the girls high jump (5-2) and teammate Heaven Epps (5-0) taking second, and Adam Armstrong taking the boys pole vault (11-6).
On Saturday, the War Eagles notched first place finishes by Sydney Glee, who would win the girls 100 meter hurdles (14.24), 400 meter run (53.83) and the 300 meter hurdles (45.32), Taylor Gullatte who claimed the girls 100 meter dash (11.76), 200 meter dash (24.01) and helped the 4x100 meter relay team win the region title (46.19).
The War Eagles boys would also claim region titles in the 4x400 relay (3:20.41) and get a first place finish from Cameron Stephens in the boys 100 meter dash (10.73), which would be a new personal record for the junior. "It's an individual sports but it's total team effort," Davis said as he expressed wanting to see the War Eagles finish the season strong.
