The Marietta Blue Devils girls basketball entered the season as one of the younger rosters in Georgia high school basketball, composed of all freshmen and sophomores, yet the young Lady Blue Devils' team entered the Christmas break with an 7-5 overall record , with a region record of 2-2.

"I they're very bright eyed but also prepared for competition," Marietta head coach, Derrick DeWitt, said on Thursday as the Blue Devils returned to practice, getting set for their next matchup on Saturday when they take on James F. Byrnes (SC) on Saturday at the Atlanta Holiday Tournament at Shiloh High School.

"Every game and practice has been something new that they have to learn and adapt to for the varsity level," DeWitt added as he praised his young players for their ability to step up to the various challenges they have faced early on this season with many of them having no varsity basketball experience.

"It's a lot of teaching, but they're willing learners and they're making me a better teacher," DeWitt continued, noting that while there may be challenges at times in coaching such a young team with no upper classman leadership, he has noticed several players beginning to show they can be the voices on the court the team needs.

DeWitt says that when the team does their film study, players like sophomore, Kyann Senior, who averages 12.6 points and 11.9 rebounds per game, and freshman, Leah DeWitt, who averages 23.3 points and 3.7 assist per game, "will have little mini huddles through the course of the game, so they are communicating and having one on one conversations and it's starting to take an affect," DeWitt said, adding the more "reserved' players" are using their voice more.

"It's exciting because I know where they're going to be moving forward, I just can't be greedy right now, wanting everything now, but it's been fun, they're doing a good job," DeWitt added.
